As 2026 draws to a close, what have been the defining developments in skills, education and workforce policy, and what should industry, the education and training system and policymakers be preparing for in 2027?
Significant reform implementation has continued across Australia’s tertiary education system in 2026. At the same time, industry continues to grapple with skills and workforce shortages, the impacts of new technologies and challenging economic conditions.
Through our research, advocacy and thought leadership, Australian Industry Group Centre for Education and Training has been closely involved in many of the major developments impacting tertiary education nationally. Our focus across all of them is working with and for industry to create an education and training system that delivers the human capital Australia needs to reach its potential.
With so much to reflect on and plenty in store for 2027, this conversation with the Centre’s leaders will explore topics including:
-
What are the key takeaways from the Centre’s research and advocacy in 2026?
-
What are the big issues currently shaping skills and workforce demand across industries and how should our education and training system respond?
-
What is 2027 likely to bring and what will the Centre be focused on?
Taking part in this discussion will be:
-
Dr Caroline Smith, Executive Director, Australian Industry Group Centre for Education and Training
-
Innes Willox, Chief Executive, Australian Industry Group
-
